"Extreme unction" and "last rites" are no longer a part of the Church's ministry to the sick and dying, according to Father Charles Gusmer. Today, communal celebration frames sacramental experience. In the rites for the sick and dying, the experience is the paschal mystery - working in the life of the seriously ill Christian in the community. Reverend Charles W. Gusmer is a teacher and scholar world-renowned for his work on the pastoral care of the sick. He received his doctorate in sacred theology from the Theological Faculty in Trier and teaches at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Seton Hall University, New Jersey.
