"Who will not bless you, O Most Holy Virgin? Who will not sing of your most pure childbearing?" Hear the St Vladimir's Seminary Male Chorale sing chants honoring Mary's particular and intimate role in the life and death of Jesus, from His incarnation and birth, to standing at the foot of His Cross and yearning to rejoin Him in heaven at her own falling asleep. The recording's title, "Rejoice!" draws upon one side of a dialectic inherent in Luke's Gospel, between the angel's greeting, "Rejoice, O Full of Grace, the Lord is with you," and Mary's response to her kinswoman Elizabeth: "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!" The appearance in nearly every Marian hymn of these two keywords, "Rejoice" and "Magnify," in turn focuses the listener on God's saving plan for all of humanity revealed through Mary as Theotokos, or "Mother of God," and on her own unique joy which is granted to every believer who receives Christ in life and in death by virtue of her own "Let it be." Featuring English-language arrangements of traditional Russian, Serbian, and Greek chants, as well as new compositions by seminary faculty and alumni, sung by the January 2007 Chorale which toured New England, and the chapel male choir, directed by Deacon Kevin Smith.
