The Ecumenical Patriarchate Today

An essential guide book for all of the multitudes of visitors to Istanbul annually

A book to appeal to all Orthodox Christians

The official guide to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, this richly illustrated work recounts the history of the foremost seat of the Orthodox Church over seventeen centuries. It takes the reader on a pictorial journey through the long-revered shrines in Istanbul that still attract over a million pilgrims and visitors each year. It describes the patriarchal residence and church of St. George at the Phanar, as well as many other splendid churches, monasteries, and holy places in and around the city. The book also explores the theology and liturgy, as well as the iconography and spirituality of the Orthodox Church.

The sites covered in this unique guide include:

The seat of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Phanar

The church and shrine of the "Life-giving Spring" at Balikli

The church of the Virgin Mary Vlachernitissa at Ayvansaray

Holy Trinity Church in Taksim Square

The shrine of the Virgin Vefa ("First-Day-of-the-Month Church") in Unkapani
